There is more than one important lesson that I have learned doing research on vintage double hose regulators, but the one that keeps taunting me is; that you cannot trust the condition or contents of any regulator that you find.
I have seen too many instances where the regulator defies the manuals or service guides and I'm left wondering what is right and what is wrong? It would be like finding a car buried in a barn, and because the odometer shows only 500 miles that the white wall tires were stock.... But in my case it would be that a regulator had a different yoke and screw, or a balanced nozzle on a DA Aqua Master, the list goes on....
And to verify any authentic regulator parts, I would turn to the Aqua Lung service manual, a vintage text, vintage advertisement and try to come to a conclusion. The problem is that when I would find a part number in one diagram, then it would change on another diagram in a different text?
So there are two forces of confusion that exist; manuals change as parts are updated, and new designs evolve, plus the human factor of divers doing their own work, a service technician back in the day making their own changes, or some unscrupulous person on eWhore selling a regulator that is not authentic. The list is too long for this discussion, but one of the answers is to compare as many text as you can.
This manual is one of my favorites, but it is not the only one that I use. So in addition to this beautiful reproduction, I have added a chapter on some of the different schematics of JetAir, Mistral, Aqua Master and Royal Aqua Master.
This copy of the Aqua Lung by U.S. Divers Regulator Service Manual, is as authentic as I can make in a reproduction. The service manual was for the Dive Store service technician to professionally repair double hose regulators.
